Dettifoss, 40 km NE of Myvatn

Dettifoss (Tumbling Falls) is regarded as the most powerful waterfall in Iceland, and also Europe. It is on the Jokulsa a fjollum river, the longest in Iceland, that drains from the north side of the Vatnajokull glacier, the largest glacier on Iceland. As a result this river has a powerful and year-round flow. We accessed the falls on the west bank, as the eastern access road was still closed after the winter. Apparently, the view is better from the east side due to less spray from the falls.
