Whimbrels feeding on Crowberry barrens

Whimbrels stop over in Newfoundland and Labrador in their migration from breeding grounds in the arctic to their wintering grounds on the seashores of southern North America and South America. Here they feed on crowberries on the barrens. This is a change from their usual seashore (where I have only ever seen them otherwise) diet of invertebrates and was a surprise to me! Who knew? I suppose it is a case of "carb-loading" prior to a further several thousand miles flight to their winter digs. Oh, and the gulls were at it too!
