On the east side of Zion is the Checkerboard Mesa. The horizontal lines are called crossbedding and relate to how the sand that makes up the rock was laid down. The vertical lines are due to strains and cracks in the rock layers as they were uplifted along with the rest of the Colorado Plateau and have been accentuated by water erosion and frost wedging.
