Into Dimmuborgir

Dimmuborgir means "Dark Castles", conjuring up an image of derelict castles or citadels. Dimmuborgir lies to the east of Myvatn lake. It originated when lava flowed over a bog. The superheated steam that resulted blew the lava into weird spires of rock interspersed with often large lava tubes. Today, trails wind through these features. Dimmuborgir is also home to a large expanse of amazing Lymegrass-covered black sand dunes. In 2015, we did not go as far into Dimmuborgir as we did in 2016, as our visit coincided with a freezing downpour!
