The wide harbour mouth seen in the "before" picture was reduced by least 50% in width (about to where the ship is located in the photo) by lava flows in the 1973 eruption. Only heroic efforts to cool the lava with pumped seawater prevented it from completely closing the harbour. Its loss would have been a huge economic disaster for Iceland, not only for the island.
