Derek was an English portrait and landscape painter, who began the Tory school of landscape painting. He began this after a visit to Donegal to paint the portrait of Henry McIlhenny, owner of Glenveagh Castle. Hill lived for many years in Donegal and had the artist's hut on the northwest cliffs of Tory.
