Hallgrimskirkja, Reykjavik

This enormous concrete church that dominates the skyline of Reykjavik took over 30 years to build. Its design is based upon the basalt columns found all over Iceland. There is also an echo of the Hraundrangi, or Steeple Rock, in the Oxnadalur valley of North Iceland. From the top of the steeple, one gets a superlative view of all of the city and its surroundings. The interior of the church is quite stark and austere, but houses a huge organ.
