Hekla, with its hood of clouds, S. Iceland
Hekla means "hooded", hooded in clouds. One of the most troublesome and destructive volcanos in Iceland's history of volcanos. In mediaeval times it was considered it to be the Gateway to Hell. Its eruptions in the 17th and 18th centuries caused great death and destruction. Still active, Hekla is responsible for much of the total tephra fallen, and lava, in Iceland
