The central highlands of Iceland are a mostly rocky desert with limited access. This road is only officially open during the summer months (~mid June to ~mid September). During that time there is a 4-WD bus service between Reykjavik and Akureyri, and a certain level of adventurous tourists traveling the road. Despite that, though super-jeeps attempt the crossing in winter when there is not too much snow, it can be impassable at any time of the year!
