The Hveravellir Thermal area is about 30 km NW of Kerlingarfjöll. Because it is just off Rte 35, it is much more of a way-station than Kerlingarfjöll, which is more of a destination. Though it is much smaller in area than the Hveradalir area it has a different assemblage of thermal features, so is worth a stop.
