This is one of 2 Smithsonian Institution components outside Washington, DC (both in NYC) and the only component charging admission. It is located in the Andrew Carnegie Mansion on 5th Av on Upper East Side. The origins of the museum are associated with descendants of Peter Cooper, the founder of Cooper Union. The museum reopened in late 2014 after a 6 year renovation. It has permanent and rotating exhibitions on historic and contemporary design.
