Canyonlands NP is a park of 4 separate units located in southeastern Utah. The closest town of any size is Moab. Also close by Moab is Arches NP. Three of the four units are reasonably easily accessed by road. The fourth, the Maze, requires technical 4WD or river access. We visited Needles and Island in the Sky in 2011, but as Horseshoe Canyon is quite remote from the others (120 miles one way by road from Moab), we left it to visit in 2012 on our way from Grand Canyon and Monument Valley to Capitol Reef NP. We were at our furthest point west of our trip in 2011 at Needles, and our furthest point east of our trip in 2012 at Horseshoe Canyon with these points separated by only 25 miles of rocky desert, as the raven flies!
