Leirhnjúkur
In late May 2015, we attempted to hike around the Leirhnjúkur lava field beside Krafla but were stymied by the deep snow still persisting on the access and trails in this upland area. With the snow melted in midsummer we could see how treacherous the ground would have been to try hike over with snow covering deep holes and cracks. The lava field dates from the mid-70 to 80s when Krafla last erupted.
